Afternoons
Afternoons
What began as a recording project between members of the band Irving, Grammy award winner Tom Biller, and opera singer Claire McKeown has spiraled into something much more. Beginning with a performance at L.A.'s Natural History Museum with Seawolf (see LA Weekly pictures from the January 4, 2008 show), Afternoons was soon thereafter handpicked as main support for the Duke Spirit's first L.A. show, a June residency at Spaceland, and is now, only twelve months later, turning into a revolution. So what is going on with Afternoons? * April 2008 - Indie 103 and KCRW in Los Angeles somehow score demo copies of Afternoons' recordings and are already playing "Say Yes" * May 2008 - Guerrilla artist and propagandist Shepherd Fairey likes demo, and proves it by creating "Say Yes" posters for the band * June 2008 - Very first evening of Afternoons' 5-week Spaceland residency is beyond capacity, with a line down the block * June 2008 - Afternoons is already enjoying press nods from Los Angeles Magazine ("Just go"), Flavorpill ("Afternoons shimmer with unflinching enthusiasm"), and Filter ("instantly transports you in the middle of what feels like a parade"). * July 2008 - Afternoons plays to capacity crowd at Hammer Museum alongside Tokyo Police Club * August 2008 - Afternoons join Dengue Fever at the EL Rey Theatre in Los Angeles * October 2008 - Afternoons share stage with the Mars Volta at LA Weekly's Detour Festival * November 2008 - Afternoons join Earlimart for Indie 103.1's Check One Tuesday at the EchoPlex; a live recording of Afternoons song "The Intervention of Daniel Fields" hits the airwaves by the following Sunday and is available through Spaceland Recordings * December 2008 - The band's song "Saturday Morning (after the funeral)" is tentatively scheduled to air on Gossip Girl on December 1, 2008, concurrent with iTunes release
