Lady Grey
Lady Grey
"The music of Lady Grey - a lush blend of folk, blues and country, with enough Lucinda Williams to warrant serious commendation - is ideal for the narrative course. Like the hidden meaning that lies at the heart of the album's title, Lady Grey gives us plenty to explore." - PATRICK EMERY, BEAT. Lizanne Friebel took out first place with song ‘Of Wifely Constitution’ in the Good Folk Club Competition, 2007. The prizes set in motions a new stunning mini-album recording which in turn was entitled 'Of Wifely Constitution'. The album was launched to a full house at The Toff in Town on 5th November. A mini-tour followed with dates in Hepburn Springs and Geelong. The songs float between blues, folk and country, possessing a pop sensibility. Lyrics are rarely written with such a blend of soul and smarts. With the sugar of blues ladies, classic and contemporary, Nina Simone and Chan Marshall, Lizanne leads with a voice of earthy otherworldliness. The musicianship sensibilities of Jacob Cole, Catherine Leslie, Issie Trollope and Ralf Rehak combine to make each song unique. Recorded and mixed by Buzz Bahlaw at Intergalactic Studios and mastered by Jack the Bear, 'Of Wifely Constitution' is Lady Grey’s strongest release to date and is worthy of some serious listening and hype. IT IS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT POLYESTER RECORDS, 387 BRUNSWICK STREET, FITZROY. AlSO AT READINGS BOOKSTORE, 309 LYGON STREET, CARLTON. Lady Grey began with singer songwriter Lizanne Friebel, keen to expand repertoire and perform. The initial six song demo enabled Lady Grey a place to compete in the 2006 PBS FM Festival of Song Competition. Their laid back blues folk tunes saw them sail into the Grand Final. Ever since Lady Grey has been playing gigs regularly at venues including Wesley Anne, Cornish Arms, Edinburgh Castle and CERES. Lady Grey has evolved into a dynamic five piece outfit. Issie Trollope, a seasoned performer on double bass combined with Ralf Rehak (of Machine Translations) on drums provide a great percussive force. Jake Cole's intuitive lead and slide guitar has a rare chic. Catherine Leslie on violin adds texture and colour as well as tight vocal harmonies. Lizanne's lead vocals are commanding and her connection to the emotional content of the songs is evident. "Finally a singer-songwriter has emerged from the Music Melbourne scene - via Africa and London - to bring a sassy cosmopolitanism to folk music." - K.Z CARROLL, REAL TIME ARTS. "Lizanne has a great voice and a strong sense of flavoring her performance with attention to the emotion carried in her songs." - Judge's comment from Good Folk Song Competition 2007.
