“28 Costumes have cemented themselves as a must-see” NME
28 Costumes are Chris (guitar, vocals), Tony (guitar, vocals), Ally (drums, percussion) and Paul (bass, keyboards)
28 Costumes are a rag-tag explosion of human emotion coming straight out of Liverpool. Reminiscent of the 75-ideas-at-once philosophy of XTC coupled to Jarvis Cocker’s wry story-telling about life as a bog-standard Brit, 28 Costumes will make you laugh, jump for joy and cry at regularly-spaced intervals.
Fuelled by frontman Chris McIntosh’s searing honesty, their gigs and records are joyous celebrations of dour England’s disappointments. Boo-hoo. “Sometimes I wish I wasn’t as honest,” says Chris, “because when me girlfriend listens to a song she goes like ‘who’s that about?’ And I say ‘I’ve made it up.’ And she says, ‘well… it’s very specific.’ And I can’t lie so I go ‘Alright, its true.’ It does get me in trouble. But what can you do?”
Taking the show on tour with the likes of The Futureheads, Editors, Maximo Park and Bloc Party has garnered the Cossies a loyal UK-wide fanbase. Famous fans include Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens on BBC Radio One, Tom ‘2468 Motorway’ Robinson and Phill Jupitus on BBC Radio 6 and Janice Long on BBC Radio 2 and Adam and Joe on XFM. The video for last single Inside/Outside has also been played a number of times on MTV2’s 120 Minutes.
Following the success of the limited release singles ‘Hurricane’ and ’21 Years’, the Cossies released debut album ‘The Fake Death Experience’ on Spank Records in November 2004, which garnered rave reviews. The NME was moved to call the album “A torrent of Pixies-esque guitar belligerence over swathes of shimmering hooks", whilst The Independent called it "An engrossing journey... full of risks and ideas". The Fly enthused "Truly, this is a work of rare genius", whilst Artrocker thought it was “frivolous, serious and totally genius". Even The Daily Star wanted a piece of the action, calling it "A raging tempest... with the 'Epic' dial cranked up to 11".
Second album ‘Adventure Stories’ (out late Summer 2006) builds on the success of ‘The Fake Death Experience’ with a poppier, catchier, but altogether stranger set of hits. Featuring March’s power-rocking single ‘Inside/Outside’ and the Suede-meets-Pulp-head-over-heels-in-love vibe of latest single ‘You Excite Me’, the album is a pure pop explosion.
28 Costumes communicate the realities of life and make it fucking good fun.
